In this series, our president &amp; CEO, Dave Mattson, will provide guidance on how you can overcome these challenges.<\/p>\r\n<p>This Blind Spot is no process or methodology within the organization. Now, that means we tend to wing it. I know that&#8217;s not true for everybody. I know that&#8217;s not true 100% of the time.<\/p>\r\n<p>Certain things we have methodology for. Like, figuring out commissions. How to do P &amp; L&#8217;s. Making sure that the bills are paid. All the engineering aspects of our organization, shipping, and things like that. But, even then, we have some methodology and processes but to necessarily all the way through.<\/p>\r\n<p>Some industries, we want process and methodology. I certain want it with pilots. I certainly want it with surgeons. I don&#8217;t want them making it up as they go.<\/p>\r\n<p>Why don&#8217;t we want it within our department, our group? The majority of time it&#8217;s because we believe it&#8217;s micromanagement. I don&#8217;t have time to pull out and figure out if I&#8217;m following the process. I don&#8217;t think it has to be that way. I think you&#8217;re looking at is as an inhibitor versus an enhancer.<\/p>\r\n<p>Following process and methodology simply says, &#8220;What are the five or six steps that I should be doing to follow x?&#8221; I do it all the time. Listen, I hate methodology to a certain extent, because I think I&#8217;m getting micromanaged. If it&#8217;s not my methodology then I question it. That&#8217;s just my own head trash. But, if we were to say, &#8220;Hey, we&#8217;re going to do a product launch, here&#8217;s the process that you follow,&#8221; I&#8217;m going to ensure that I have a great product launch and not go back and say, &#8220;Gosh, why didn&#8217;t we do x, y, and z?&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>So, if you want to shrink our mistakes, then go to methodology. Go to process. Again, what kills is if you have a 38 page book on something that could have really been a one pager.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sit down with your team. Sit down with your new team. Ask them, &#8220;Over the last six months, as a new employee, what were the areas that you felt like we could&#8217;ve done a better job training you? You didn&#8217;t know this, or you didn&#8217;t have a process to do that. They&#8217;ll tell you in two seconds. Why? &#8216;Cause I look down, I don&#8217;t see it, I live it every single day. So, I mentally fill in the blanks. People who just started with you don&#8217;t have that luxury.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sit down with your team every six months. Update your process and methodologies.
