{"id":10770,"date":"2015-11-24T15:35:09","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandler.dsstaging2.com\/case-study\/happy-sales-team-happy-business\/"},"modified":"2022-11-09T20:52:24","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T20:52:24","slug":"happy-sales-team-happy-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandler.com\/blog\/happy-sales-team-happy-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Sales Team; Happy Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Sales managers recognize that a primary part of their jobs is to keep their sales teams productive.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But, keep them happy!\u00a0 Is that really part of the job?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Yes.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Salespeople may be\u00a0<em>thankful<\/em>\u00a0for having a good job, but\u00a0<em>happiness<\/em>\u00a0is another dimension of the work experience\u2014an important and often overlooked dimension.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When jobs are scarce, people will put up with a lot to keep their jobs.\u00a0 But, as opportunities emerge, those who are not happy will be ready to move on to meet new challenges and find opportunities where they can make better use of their abilities\u2026and be happy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So, if you have productive people and you want to keep them producing for you, then, \u201cYes,\u201d keeping them happy is part of your job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A few years ago, a professional organization within the recruitment industry conducted a study about why people leave their jobs and seek new employment opportunities.\u00a0 The study revealed that people left their jobs because they were unhappy with one or more aspects of it.\u00a0 The reasons fell into four categories.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>People were unhappy with:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Their incomes.<\/strong>\u00a0Where incomes had plateaued or compensation was not perceived as being proportionate to contribution, dissatisfaction was high.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>The nature of the work in which they were engaged.<\/strong>\u00a0 Doing routine work and not feeling challenged, and thereby not feeling stimulated or motivated, was a common complaint. Feeling that their careers had stalled and their professional growth hindered was also common.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>The people with whom they worked.<\/strong>\u00a0 Issues revolved around elements such as camaraderie, teamwork, respect, and communication.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Their work environment<\/strong>\u2014which included the physical environment, the company culture, the degree of supervision, and the degree to which they received recognition for their work.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Which category do you suppose ranked number one?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Money?\u00a0 People?\u00a0 The work environment, perhaps?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The previous list is presented in reverse order of importance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That\u2019s right, \u201cmoney\u201d was the least important reason for leaving a job.\u00a0 The ability to do interesting and challenging work, and to be recognized for it, played a more important part in the decision.\u00a0 This recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.ted.com\/what-motivates-us-at-work-7-fascinating-studies-that-give-insights\/\">TED Article<\/a>\u00a0discusses some additional studies by Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist, that give insights into work motivation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The work environment\u2014was the number one reason cited for leaving a job.\u00a0 Keeping that in mind, what can you do to keep your salespeople happy?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_13020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13020\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13020 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sandler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/How-to-Succeed-at-Recruiting-and-Hiring-Great-Salespeople.jpeg\" alt=\"A group of salespeople sitting in chairs and talking to each other\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/sandler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/How-to-Succeed-at-Recruiting-and-Hiring-Great-Salespeople.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/sandler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/How-to-Succeed-at-Recruiting-and-Hiring-Great-Salespeople-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sandler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/How-to-Succeed-at-Recruiting-and-Hiring-Great-Salespeople-768x512.jpeg 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/467;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A group of happy salespeople talking to each other.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>You can be sensitive to your salespeople\u2019s need for feedback.\u00a0 Let them know how they are doing.\u00a0 Regularly scheduled coaching and debriefing sessions let them know that their contributions are not being overlooked. \u00a0Even feedback that is less than glowing will be appreciated because it validates that they are not being ignored.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandler.com\/blog\/25-real-teamwork-tips-for-managers\">This blog post<\/a>\u00a0also gives some great tips for building teamwork and keeping employees happy. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And, don\u2019t take excellent performance for granted.\u00a0 When you come to expect top notch results from your top producers, and they consistently deliver, it\u2019s easy to overlook the recognition that is due.\u00a0 Little things like a handshake often mean as much to them as the tangible evidence of performance they see in their paychecks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Not everyone, however, is a top producer.\u00a0 But, even the less-than-stellar performers deserve recognition. So, don\u2019t forget to acknowledge them, too, for their efforts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>You can also help create a comfortable work environment where your people feel secure.\u00a0 People need to be kept informed about the activities in which they play a part as well as what\u2019s expected of them. \u00a0When people are kept in the dark, or even feel like they are being kept in the dark, fears and doubts arise.\u00a0 Providing clear, concise, and frequent information helps alleviate those feelings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It takes a little effort to keep your people happy.\u00a0 But, when you keep them happy, they\u2019ll keep producing.\u00a0 And, that should keep you happy as well.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sales managers recognize that a primary part of their jobs is to keep their sales teams productive.\u00a0 But, keep them happy!\u00a0 Is that really part of the job?
